The Ghost Orchid

Simple and beautiful instrumental electonica with dancing guitars. The sweetest thing I’ve heard in quite some time. It reminds me of first kisses, passing notes in class, and the final scene from Planes, Trains & Automobiles. It’s the soundtrack to moments and memories that make you fight back happy tears. The perfect thing for a late night make out session with the cool edgy girl of your dreams.

MouseRocket

MouseRocket merges the chamber music vibrations of a cello with “face-melter noise interludes” to create a sound that shouldn’t work—but does. From the country-tinged pop of “Set on You” to the tweaked-out and pitch-shifted noise-capade of “Missing Teeth” this Memphis band offers an uncanny sound palette that is undeniably fun, idiosyncratic, and probably more than a little weird. Check out the neurotic punk of “My Boyfriend’s A Killer” and then the contemplative pop of “All Been Broken” to get a sense of how MouseRocket can travel from one musical aesthetic to another, and yet somehow still sound focused. –Bill Dvorak
